Mylo Vickery - Aged 9

The imagination in this story is wonderful. Several judges loved the in-depth description. You clearly have a great imagination! This was a very fun read and the cliffhanger has us all wanting more and more! It's a fantastic start to what we're sure will be a great adventure for Mylo. Very creative and we love the idea of paintings coming to life! You also were very good at not making us feel rushed in the story, as the links between times and events in the paragraphs felt very natural and well done!

The descriptive language is as bright & colourful as Nan’s magic paint pallet. The image of the dragon perching on a block of flats did make me chuckle.  The way you described the diamond like blue horns was excellent. This had a truly beautiful blend between the normal everyday life and fantasy. Well done!

The Magic Paint Pallet

‘’Are we nearly there?’’ I said as we whizzed past leaf-green trees. We were heading to nan’s house for dinner. After a long, five-hour car journey, I was starving. All mum had brought was loads of vegetable sticks and one packet of hula-hoops each!

“Here we are, nan’s house!” said Mum.

Finally.

In front of me I could see small stone steps leading up to a little cottage with trees looming all around it. Out of a corner of my eye, I could see a warm teal glow coming from one of the windows.

In the house, nan showed me some of her art. She was really talented! One of her paintings caught my eye - a mysterious picture  of a bridge with a strange emblem of an orange sword encrusted with jewels of emerald-green, magenta and blue. Later that day, nan gave me my own set of water colours. I couldn’t help noticing that the tin had the same emblem on it.

“Use these paints wisely,” nan said.

I wasn’t sure what she  meant, but I didn’t care. I was eager to try the paints for myself.

The next day, mum took me to an art shop to buy some supplies. I really wanted to create some art that was as good as nan’s. So I set to work.
First I painted a black dragon with beautiful sky-blue horns and vibrant yellow wings and breathing strong dark thunder.

The next day I went back to my art and to my surprise the dragon was not there. The page was empty! So I went to see if my rubber had been used, thinking my little brother had something to do with it, and it hadn’t.

I left for school and when I looked back I saw the dragon perched high on our block of flats. I could not believe my eyes. There was the dragon I had painted right there on top of the building, its blue horns shining and shimmering like the diamonds I once saw at the museum.

At school we had an art lesson and that’s when calamity struck. The other classes had booked all of the paint pallets so, Mrs Day asked if the class could use mine. I was really worried and insisted they use somebody else’s, but Mrs Day said no.  It was first Alfie’s go. He painted Calamity Flamon, the evil villain from my favourite computer game. Suddenly a thick fog spread over the page and by the time the fog had lifted, the painting had gone.

What was I going to do? Calamity was swirling around the school like a snake.

I thought back to my favourite game - there was only one way to defeat the monster and that  was to get the legendary ultra-sword located in the temple of years.

On hearing the commotion, the headmaster, Mr Knight, entered the room. He took one look at the scene in front of him and beckoned to me. I quickly followed him out of the room, passed all the other classes. There he said, “Don’t tell anybody about this,” and pressed a button on the side of the wall. There was a room that I had never seen before.

Inside were rows and rows of shelves, stacked high with boxes, books and bottles. It was a potions room! Mr Knight was a potions master! He shoved a piece of paper in front of me, “Quick, draw the ultra-sword before Calamity Flamon ruins our school!”. I grabbed the magic paint pallet and started painting, while Mr Knight thumbed through a huge book – he was looking for a recipe.

As soon as my painting was finished a I realised I had drawn the same sword nan had painted on her bridge picture. Before my eyes, flashed the ultra-force and the sword became real! Mr Knight hurried over with a potion he had just made and carefully dipped a cloth into the potion and rubbed it all over the sword.

“Now to defeat Calamity! Let’s go, Mylo!”

To be continued…
